Bladder to be safe than sorry!

21 February 2025

Play your part in supporting the kidney cause this World Kidney Day on Thursday 13 March and help raise awareness of kidney disease and kidney health.

Detecting kidney disease early is the most effective way of stopping it in its tracks, so lifestyle changes or specific medications can be introduced.

Take a wee look

But awareness is low, 80% of people don’t even know what the kidneys do, so ensuring people know what symptoms to look for is vital. This year, our ‘Take a wee look’ campaign is designed to help people look for warning signs in their wee.

We have created posters and leaflets that explain how blood or protein in the urine can be a sign of kidney problems, and encourage people to take our online kidney health check.

Graphic of a toilet bowl, split into 7 sections (like a pie chart) each a different colour explaining what the different colours of urine could mean

What do the colours mean?

  • 1: Frothy urine (lots of bubbles) could be a sign of protein in your urine which can be an early sign of kidney disease
  • 2: A red or pink colour could be blood in your urine.
  • 3 – 5: Dehydration can lead to kidney problems. Make sure you’re staying hydrated
  • 6 – 7: Urine should be a straw-like colour or paler.
Your urine holds the clues – don’t ignore them!

Help spread the message

We’ll be raising awareness ourselves, and we’re also asking you, our brilliant supporters, to help spread the word even further. Can you find new places to display and share our posters and leaflets – perhaps in your workplace, local café, church, mosque or temple?

Lucy Sreeves, executive director Kidney Research UK said: “Our supporters will know how devastating kidney disease can be and we’re doing everything we can to stop people reaching kidney failure.

A simple poster has the power to encourage people to think about their kidney health. Together, we can save lives by spreading the word.”

Kidney Charities Together

The Kidney Charities Together (KCT) group is launching a new campaign for World Kidney Day 2025 called 'Don’t Kid Yourself'.

It's all about challenging the myths about kidney disease and shedding light on the true facts.

We will be using common myths to raise awareness of the true realities, sharing facts and stats and equipping the kidney community with downloadable tools and assets to spread the word.

Keep an eye on the World Kidney Day UK social channels and join us in highlighting just how big an issue kidney disease is. You will also find lots of downloadable resources on the website.
