{"id":70597,"date":"2021-12-29T13:18:08","date_gmt":"2021-12-29T13:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?page_id=70597"},"modified":"2024-10-23T08:35:04","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T07:35:04","slug":"medtech-network","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/research-networks\/medtech-network\/","title":{"rendered":"MedTech Network"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>UK\u00a0Kidney\u00a0MedTech\u00a0Research Network<\/h1>\n<p>Rapid advancement in medical technology (MedTech) has the potential to completely transform patient care.\u00a0\u00a0The UK Kidney MedTech (UKKMT) Research Network will bring together expertise and experience in MedTech to make sure that people living with kidney disease benefit from new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t<h2><b>What is MedTech?<\/b>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>MedTech refers to technologies used to improve delivery of medical care and covers a a range of technologies including:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Medical devices,\u00a0such as new dialysis machines\u00a0or new surgical equipment\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Digital technology, including &#8220;apps&#8221; for monitoring patients or supporting decision-making or artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Diagnostic testing,\u00a0such as developing tests that patients can\u00a0use for themselves at home, to support self-management\u00a0of their condition.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<h2>Main focus:<\/h2>\n<p>The UKKMT research network will\u00a0harness the advances that are being made in the medical technology sector. <\/p>\n<p>Technology has the potential to prevent the development and progression of kidney disease, as well as improving the quality of life for those who do develop kidney disease. MedTech can help patients to be more active in managing their own health better and it can enable them to be more independent.<\/p>\n<p>The UKKMT Research Network will work with patients and healthcare professionals to identify the existing unmet needs and the right diagnostics and devices to provide the best solutions. <\/p>\n<p>The network will provide support and advise on existing research into diagnostics, devices, technologies and apps in the discovery stage through collaboration to eventual use in the clinic, in the community and in patients&#8217; homes. \u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/UKKMT-Research-Network-terms-of-reference.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tView terms of reference\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>Aims:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To transform the way we diagnose,\u00a0treat\u00a0and monitor kidney disease through the best use of\u00a0health\u00a0technologies\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To develop a network of people with a broad range of expertise who can support and encourage new research and develop the right evidence base for established research<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To encourage new research incorporating medical technology and support collaboration between researchers and other experts, including existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/research-networks\/uk-kidney-research-consortium\/\">UK\u00a0Kidney Research Consortium (UKKRC)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/research-networks\/clinical-study-groups\/\">clinical study groups<\/a> (CSGs) and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/research-networks\/\">research networks<\/a><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Seek to understand the pathophysiology and impact of kidney disease better through the use of diagnostics, technology, devices, apps and associated data<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To act as a reference point with a broad range of expertise from membership to help innovators and investigators to develop and refine medtech research projects<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To influence funding bodies\u202fand strengthen opportunities for research in\u202fmedical technology to benefit patients with kidney disease\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To become a stronger voice and draw on health economic arguments and greater efficiency to influence policy makers\u00a0on the adoption of health technologies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Challenges:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">To ensure\u202fthat the introduction of\u202fnovel technologies\u202fconsiders\u202fthe needs of all patients and does not widen the gap in terms of existing health inequalities\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Navigating complex information governance and harmonisation of technologies across different trusts and\u202fbetween primary care, secondary\u00a0care and labs<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The use of medical technology across health services is growing at a fast pace and\u202fhorizon scanning of new and emerging technology will be key.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Unmet needs<\/h2>\n<p>We\u202fare always looking for opportunities to advance the development of MedTech for kidney patients.
