This is all perfectly normal.<\/p>\n<p>Your mental health is just as important as your physical health so try not to bottle feelings up. It can help to talk to other people about the way you&#8217;re feeling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t<h3>Impact on your mental wellbeing<\/h3>\n<p><strong>You may be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>trying to come to terms with some of the potential implications of kidney disease &#8211; restrictions to diet, daily routines, work and social life (especially if you are on dialysis)<\/li>\n<li>experiencing emotional highs and lows as you prepare for a kidney transplant or as you adapt to life post-transplant<\/li>\n<li>concerned that your kidney disease may be affecting your relationships with your loved ones or affecting their emotional wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>worried about finances, especially if your illness has forced you to reduce your hours or give up work completely<\/li>\n<li>at a stage in your life where you feel that treatments which manage the symptoms of your kidney disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/living-with-kidney-disease\/care-and-treatments-for-people-with-kidney-failure\/choosing-not-to-start-dialysis\/\">conservative care<\/a>) may outweigh the benefits of dialysis<\/li>\n<li>and many other emotions which are all valid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shutterstock_229879537-caring-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up,Of,Psychiatrist,Hands,Together,Holding,Palm,Of,Her,Patient\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1707\" width=\"2560\" title=\"Close-up,Of,Psychiatrist,Hands,Together,Holding,Palm,Of,Her,Patient\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shutterstock_229879537-caring-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up,Of,Psychiatrist,Hands,Together,Holding,Palm,Of,Her,Patient\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1707\" width=\"2560\" title=\"Close-up,Of,Psychiatrist,Hands,Together,Holding,Palm,Of,Her,Patient\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t<h2>Talk to your healthcare professional<\/h2>\n<p>The emotional impact of kidney disease can create physical side effects such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Difficulty sleeping<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>Lack of energy<\/li>\n<li>Low mood<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Decreased interest in sex and\/or difficulty becoming sexually aroused<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Talk to your doctor, or renal team, if you are affected by any of these issues. They can help you to find ways to deal with them.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Talk to your loved ones<\/h3>\n<p>Your family and friends may be experiencing a lot of the same emotions as you but they may be afraid to tell you how they&#8217;re really feeling for fear of upsetting you. Similarly, you may be trying to put on a brave face for them. For example, you may be feeling low after receiving a kidney from a close friend or family member but feel you have to hide your true feelings for fear of appearing ungrateful.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to your loved ones can help to reduce worries on both sides. You may find that involving them in your kidney disease self-management can help too, for example, asking them to come along to your doctor&#8217;s appointments or dialysis sessions or writing a weekly meal plan together. This can save you from having to explain things to them and it can help them to understand your condition better.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Talk to a counsellor or social worker<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes it can be helpful to speak to someone outside your family and friendship circles, such as a renal counsellor (for emotional support and mental wellbeing) and a renal social worker (for financial support and benefits advice).<\/p>\n\t<ul>\n<li>Ask your kidney unit to put you in touch with a local counsellor or social worker<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneycareuk.org\">Kidney Care UK<\/a> &#8211; for advice and support (including financial assistance and access to a free counselling service<\/li>\n<li>Call the National Kidney Federation&#8217;s free helpline on 0800 169 09 36 for a wide range of kidney disease-related information, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org.uk\/help-and-info\/uk-state-benefits\/\">benefits advice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<h2>Be kind to yourself<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s perfectly normal to experience a range of emotions as a person with kidney disease. I&#8217;ve got my family to think of and I work full-time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<h4>James Fenwick<\/h4>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/kidneyresearchuk.org\/case-studies\/james-and-emmas-story\/\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRead James&#8217; story\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>Talk to other patients<\/h2>\n<p>Many people find it helpful to talk to other kidney patients &#8211; either face to face, over the telephone or online.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask your kidney unit for the names and contact details of patient groups in your area<\/li>\n<li>Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/kidney.org.uk\"><u>The National Kidney Federation<\/u><\/a> \u00a0&#8211; a national kidney charity run by kidney patients<\/li>\n<li>Get information about rare kidney diseases and contact details for associated patient support groups at: <a href=\"https:\/\/rarerenal.org\/patient-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/rarerenal.org\/patient-information\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But try to keep things in perspective. Some people may have had very bad experiences in terms or their health and treatment.
