This is part of the\u00a0body&#8217;s\u00a0natural rhythm.\u00a0However,\u00a0people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\">chronic kidney disease<\/a> (CKD)\u00a0are more likely to\u00a0have\u00a0blood pressure that\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0decrease\u00a0during sleep,\u00a0which is\u00a0called non-dipping blood pressure.\u00a0Non-dipping blood pressure\u00a0is\u00a0thought to be worse\u00a0for heart and blood vessel health,\u00a0and increases\u00a0the risk of\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/cardiovascular-disease-and-kidney-disease\/\">cardiovascular<\/a> event, such as a heart attack or stroke.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>How\u00a0could\u00a0steroid hormones change blood pressure\u00a0during sleep?<\/h2>\r\n<p>The body\u00a0produces\u00a0many naturally occurring hormones, this includes\u00a0steroid hormones.\u00a0Glucocorticoids are a steroid hormone\u00a0essential for normal bodily functions and\u00a0their\u00a0levels\u00a0vary throughout the day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In laboratory models, altering the natural levels of glucocorticoids can trigger non-dipping blood pressure. Steroids, which are artificial versions of the body&#8217;s natural glucocorticoids, are widely used medicines to help reduce inflammation (part of the body&#8217;s defence system) in conditions where it is damaging the body&#8217;s own tissues. People living with long term conditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/diabetes\/\">diabetes<\/a>, can also have changes to the body&#8217;s natural levels of glucocorticoids. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>A closer look at glucocorticoids and kidney vessels\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p>Jess and the team have been\u00a0studying\u00a0the effect of glucocorticoids on the\u00a0small tubes\u00a0which carry\u00a0blood\u00a0into the kidney, called the renal arteries.\u00a0Widening and narrowing of the renal arteries\u00a0controls\u00a0the blood flow into the kidney,\u00a0which is\u00a0an important mechanism for\u00a0helping the kidneys\u00a0to\u00a0control blood pressure.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>To test the effect of glucocorticoids on the renal arteries, Jess and the team gave a laboratory model continuous glucocorticoids, to reduce its natural rhythm. They found that in this model the renal arteries lost their normal pattern of widening and narrowing while awake or asleep. They also found that different genes, which are small sections of DNA, were switched on and off in different rhythms.
