{"id":160202,"date":"2025-12-16T16:40:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T16:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=160202"},"modified":"2025-12-16T16:40:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T16:40:55","slug":"remembering-elvis-obsessed-dad-who-died-last-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2025\/12\/16\/remembering-elvis-obsessed-dad-who-died-last-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Elvis-obsessed dad who died last Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>A\u00a0family\u00a0from Telford will spend\u00a0Christmas without\u00a0their\u00a0beloved dad,\u00a0grandad\u00a0and husband,\u00a0who was\u00a0affectionately known as &#8216;Elvis&#8217;\u00a0because of his love of\u00a0&#8216;The King of\u00a0rock &#8216;n&#8217;\u00a0roll&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Elvis &#8211; real name\u00a0Roy Owen-Jones\u00a0&#8211; was 82 years old when he passed away on 29 December 2024\u00a0after a\u00a0blockage in his kidney.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>His son, Darren,\u00a0said:\u00a0&#8220;It will be strange this Christmas without him.\u00a0All of\u00a0the big occasions without him\u00a0for the first time have been tough.\u00a0My mum and dad were together for 55 years, so it has been extremely difficult for her. She misses him a lot and is just trying to get through day by day.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0celebrate Christmas last year because Dad was in hospital. This year\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0tried to encourage mum to put up a tree and some decorations.\u00a0We&#8217;ll\u00a0all be together at Christmas to support her and each other through it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"'Elvis' - Roy Owen-Jones\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/83a74a9a-0476-4fc6-b234-8f6d4696377d-e1765902574686.jpg\" alt=\"Dad kneeling down next to small girl.\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1076\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"'Elvis' - Roy Owen-Jones\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/83a74a9a-0476-4fc6-b234-8f6d4696377d-e1765902574686.jpg\" alt=\"Dad kneeling down next to small girl.\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1076\" \/><\/noscript> Roy Owen-Jones<\/p>\r\n<h2>Kidney\u00a0problems<\/h2>\r\n<p>Roy first experienced problems with his kidneys in the mid-1990s when he needed to have\u00a0one removed\u00a0due\u00a0to\u00a0damage\u00a0in childhood.\u00a0His kidney health\u00a0worsened\u00a0in the mid-2000s\u00a0when he was\u00a0diagnosed with prostate cancer and emphysema.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Darren said: &#8220;Dad was\u00a0a very proud\u00a0man and\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0accept much help from others as his health deteriorated. He\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0like speaking about it and kept a\u00a0lot of details private, even from me\u00a0and my mum.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;He was\u00a0very young\u00a0at heart\u00a0and before he became seriously ill in his\u00a0sixties,\u00a0he was\u00a0very active.\u00a0He was really into his sport and a keen gardener.\u00a0However, in the last ten years of his life\u00a0he\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0get\u00a0out and\u00a0about\u00a0as much. Mum became his\u00a0carer\u00a0as his mobility worsened, and he became very frustrated.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;He had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/kidney-stones\/\">kidney stones<\/a> but\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0tell anyone until he collapsed with a blockage in his kidney.\u00a0He spent three months in hospital before he died.\u00a0It was\u00a0hard\u00a0seeing him suffer.\u00a0Doctors tried multiple operations\u00a0but\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0save his life.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Darren Owen-Jones\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/5f4346d8-f9cb-496e-a3a9-20186b707544.jpg\" alt=\"Male and female running dressed as Elvis in white outfits.\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1368\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Darren Owen-Jones\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/5f4346d8-f9cb-496e-a3a9-20186b707544.jpg\" alt=\"Male and female running dressed as Elvis in white outfits.\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1368\" \/><\/noscript> Darren and daughter Megan<\/p>\r\n<h2>Elvis-inspired fundraiser<\/h2>\r\n<p>In March, Darren and his daughter, Megan,\u00a0transformed themselves into Elvis\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0wearing fancy dress\u00a0to run\u00a0the Ironbridge Half\u00a0Marathon. Together they raised over \u00a31,000\u00a0for\u00a0kidney\u00a0research.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Darren said: &#8220;After Dad died, we wanted to give something back to\u00a0help\u00a0improve treatments for other patients.\u00a0My daughter and I are both runners, and she suggested we take part in the half marathon for Kidney Research UK.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to make the challenge\u00a0personal, so decided to dress up as Elvis.\u00a0Dad was obsessed with him and thought he looked similar &#8211; even though he\u00a0didn&#8217;t! He copied\u00a0the\u00a0famous hairstyle, dying his hair jet back, and dressed flamboyantly. He owned loads of Elvis\u00a0memorabilia,\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0plenty of\u00a0Elvis-related tributes at his funeral.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;The fancy dress made the run a little trickier,
