{"id":160193,"date":"2025-12-15T16:45:29","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T16:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=160193"},"modified":"2025-12-15T16:49:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T16:49:47","slug":"new-blood-marker-can-predict-individuals-most-at-risk-of-kidney-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2025\/12\/15\/new-blood-marker-can-predict-individuals-most-at-risk-of-kidney-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"New blood marker can predict individuals most at risk of kidney failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-64168-6\">study published\u00a0recently\u00a0in\u00a0Nature Communications<\/a>,\u00a0Dr Laura Denby\u00a0and collaborators\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0University of Edinburgh\u00a0and\u00a0Queen&#8217;s University Belfast,\u00a0with funding from Kidney Research UK, have discovered a new biomarker\u00a0in the blood\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\">chronic kidney disease<\/a>\u00a0(CKD). This marker\u00a0identified\u00a0patients\u00a0at a higher risk of faster\u00a0chronic kidney disease\u00a0progression,\u00a0which\u00a0in the future\u00a0could\u00a0be used to\u00a0inform earlier\u00a0interventions to help\u00a0protect kidney health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What\u00a0are the\u00a0tests\u00a0for\u00a0kidney function?<\/h2>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/about-kidney-disease\/how-is-kidney-disease-diagnosed\/\">CKD\u00a0is usually diagnosed<\/a>\u00a0with a\u00a0blood test, to measure the level of creatinine, and a urine test, to look at the level of protein.\u00a0Higher levels of these markers\u00a0suggest\u00a0reduced kidney function, which is\u00a0used\u00a0to\u00a0identify\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/stages-of-kidney-disease\/\">stage\u00a0of\u00a0CKD<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0inform\u00a0any interventions, such as\u00a0lifestyle changes,\u00a0medications,\u00a0dialysis\u00a0and transplant.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What is microRNA?<\/h2>\r\n<p>MicroRNAs\u00a0(miRNAs)\u00a0are small molecules that\u00a0are guardians of\u00a0whether\u00a0or not\u00a0certain proteins are made from the instructions\u00a0contained in our DNA.\u00a0They are found throughout the body, including\u00a0in\u00a0the kidneys.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Better\u00a0tests\u00a0are needed to\u00a0identify\u00a0patients at risk of CKD progression\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p>For\u00a0patients\u00a0with CKD,\u00a0normal\u00a0levels of\u00a0creatinine in the blood and\u00a0low\u00a0protein in the urine\u00a0can\u00a0indicate\u00a0that\u00a0their\u00a0kidneys\u00a0appear to be\u00a0working well and their\u00a0risk of disease of progression low.\u00a0However,\u00a0CKD has many\u00a0different\u00a0causes and\u00a0will affect patients differently.<\/p>\r\n<p>Some patients with CKD can have no or little\u00a0protein\u00a0in their urine\u00a0but still\u00a0go on to\u00a0lose\u00a0kidney function and in some cases\u00a0reach\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/living-with-kidney-disease\/kidney-failure\/\">kidney failure<\/a>.\u00a0By\u00a0identifying\u00a0these at-risk patients\u00a0early, this\u00a0new biomarker\u00a0could support the most\u00a0appropriate treatments\u00a0for their long-term kidney health.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Blood\u00a0microRNA\u00a0predicts CKD progression<\/h2>\r\n<p>Laura and the team began by looking at the genes\u00a0expressed\u00a0in blood samples\u00a0of 33 patients with\u00a0type\u00a02\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/diabetes\/\">diabetes<\/a>. They found a\u00a0specific type of microRNA, called\u00a0miR-190a-5p, was lower in patients\u00a0who\u00a0had\u00a0worse\u00a0kidney function.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>By\u00a0testing\u00a0the levels of this miRNA\u00a0in a\u00a0larger group of 298 patients with CKD, they were able to\u00a0identify\u00a0lower levels\u00a0in\u00a0patients with\u00a0worse\u00a0kidney function,\u00a0this time\u00a0due to a variety of causes.\u00a0When they followed up these\u00a0patients around\u00a0four years\u00a0later, they found\u00a0that amongst\u00a0patients\u00a0who\u00a0would normally be considered at low risk of CKD progression as they\u00a0had a\u00a0low or medium level of protein in the urine,\u00a0those with\u00a0a\u00a0lower miR-190a-5p\u00a0blood\u00a0level, had an\u00a0increased risk of CKD progression,\u00a0with\u00a0some patients\u00a0reaching\u00a0kidney failure\u00a0by\u00a0this time.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Laura and\u00a0her collaborators\u00a0then\u00a0went on to look at\u00a0where\u00a0miR-190a-5p\u00a0is found and what role it could have in the kidney.\u00a0By examining\u00a024\u00a0biopsy samples\u00a0they\u00a0could look at how much\u00a0miR-190a-5p\u00a0was present\u00a0in the kidney.
