They also return certain minerals back into the blood stream and produce essential hormones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR, is a measurement calculated from blood test results that helps doctors to understand how well your kidneys are working and identify if you have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\">kidney disease (CKD)<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Healthy kidneys typically filter more than 90 ml each minute (this figure is adjusted for body size).\u00a0\u00a0A lower rate\u00a0may\u00a0indicate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\">chronic kidney disease (CKD)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/estimated-glomerular-filtration-rate\/\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFind out more about eGFR\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3>Albuminuria: the urine albumin:creatinine ratio<\/h3>\n\t<p>A simple urine test called the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bRfaYbkuVYo\">urine Albumin:Creatinine ratio (ACR)<\/a> is also performed to look for signs that protein is leaking into the urine (a condition called albuminuria or <a href=\"https:\/\/kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/proteinuria\/\">proteinuria<\/a>). This is an important sign of kidney damage. The ACR is used to calculate the &#8216;A stage&#8217; of CKD (as indicated in the stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) chart below).<\/p>\n<p>There are three recognised stages of albuminuria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A1 &#8211; normal to mildly increased urine protein levels (lower than 3mg\/mmol)<\/li>\n<li>A2 &#8211; moderately increased urine protein levels (between 3-30mg\/mmol)<\/li>\n<li>A3 &#8211; severely increased urine protein levels (higher than 30mg\/mmol)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Combining your ACR with your eGFR can help doctors try to predict whether your kidney disease is likely to progress and whether you are more likely to develop complications such as heart and circulatory problems. Other factors are also taken into account, e.g. age.
