Translation Accelerator Kidney Awards
Accelerating discoveries in kidney disease
The new Translation Accelerator Kidney Award Scheme (TAKA) will provide funding and support to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into new, effective solutions to help prevent, protect and treat kidney disease, in line with our strategic priorities.
About TAKA
The aim of our Translation Accelerator Kidney Award Scheme (TAKA) is to fund projects that accelerate the translation of novel and innovative scientific discoveries for the benefit of kidney disease patients.
These awards will enable researchers to address key scientific and technical questions in kidney-related research, supporting projects with a clearly defined pathway to new therapies, devices, and diagnostics.
Guided by unmet clinical needs, these projects will strive to deliver new and more effective solutions to help prevent, protect and treat patients with kidney disease, through the development and testing of new therapies, devices, and diagnostics.

Application information
We welcome applications from researchers in UK-based higher education institutions, NHS clinicians and clinical researchers, and allied healthcare professionals. Collaborative approaches and team approaches are encouraged.
Applications will be assessed in two stages; initial expression of interest (EOI) followed by full application.
Expression of interest: The application process will open on 01 October 2025 for submission of EOI forms which outline the required level of funding, a brief project proposal and a statement of translational impact. Applications will be assessed against the eligibility criteria, before further review from our independent external panel.
Full application: Shortlisted applicants will have 5 weeks to submit their full application which includes detailed project plans, costings and milestones. Applications will be reviewed by our independent external panel (members from clinical, commercial and research sectors and patient representatives) against defined criteria, with the outcome ratified by Kidney Research UK. We expect to notify successful recipients by the end March 2026.
At both stages, applications will be assessed against defined criteria including, but not limited to, a focus on innovation and novelty, addressing unmet medical need for kidney disease, a clear line of sight to the patient with defined milestones and costings.
