Our executive management team
Meet our chief executive and the rest of our executive management team.

Sandra Currie OBE
Chief executive
"My first career was in nursing, and I was a ward sister in a secure Mental Health Unit in Glasgow, my home city. Following a move “down South” initially to Sheffield, I have been working in the voluntary sector since 1990. Many of those years were spent developing a fundraising career, and I spent 15 years with a major cancer charity, latterly as Director of Fundraising.
"I joined Kidney Research UK as CEO in September 2012 and enjoy the challenges of working in a charity that needs to increase it’s influence and significantly increase income to enable us to do more research. I have been so impressed with the renal community, clinical staff, researchers, patients, our staff at the charity, the many professionals involved in renal care, and the families who care for patients, as we all work to improve the prospects for kidney patients.
"When I am not at work I dabble a bit with my garden, although it is way too big for a non-gardener. I have recently taken up dancing to try to notch up a few more hours of exercise each week, and I have developed an interest recently in classic cars, not sure where that came from. I am mum to Andrew, David, Laurence and Eve who keep me constantly in touch with the latest music, trends and technology! Or they try to."
Sandra was awarded an OBE in the King's 2025 New Year Honours.

Lucy Sreeves
Chief income and engagement officer
"I started my career working for a creative agency and had the opportunity to work with a number of high-profile brands and charities, including Tesco, Reed and Maserati. I then moved ‘client side’ and have been working in the charity sector for over 13 years. I have worked with and for a wide range of charities including Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, The RSPB and Alzheimer’s Research UK before joining Kidney Research UK in 2018.
I am very excited about the next phase that Kidney Research UK is entering and believe there is a real opportunity to educate and raise awareness of the seriousness of kidney disease. I am focused on building the kidney community by galvanising support and significantly increasing our income to accelerate research discoveries and make research count for those affected by kidney disease.
I spend the majority of my spare time with my family and two children – Jake and Rosie. We love to travel and try new experiences and food! I am also a keen swimmer, including the occasional open water swim."

Mike Bishop
Chief operating officer
"My career started in finance with Ernst and Young, before moving into more commercial areas. Over the past 20 years, I have held various senior roles driving strategic growth and transformations for businesses. First in the mobile sector with Orange, and then in the retail and e-commerce industry with Play.com and Rakuten. Prior to joining Kidney Research UK, I worked at Webinterpret, an international company in the software space, where I led strategic growth initiatives and built new revenue streams to support e-commerce businesses globally.
"In 2025, I transitioned from the commercial world to the charity sector, joining Kidney Research UK as chief operating officer, at a pivotal point in its development and growth. Bringing a commercial growth mindset, with a strong focus on operational excellence, my goal is to support our ambitious growth plans to fund the significant research needed to create the impact on transforming treatments that patients with kidney disease deserve.
"When not working I will often be found training for, or travelling to do, an endurance event. This can be anything from ultra running to biking to triathlons, I love a challenge - the harder the better! - but I always try to tag on a few days holiday afterwards if I can. Outside of training my wife and I are kept busy with our three boys and two dogs."

Dr David Crosby
Chief research officer
"I am chief research officer at Kidney Research UK, where I’m responsible for setting and delivering an ambitious research strategy aimed at ending kidney disease, through prevention, protection of kidney function and transforming treatments.
"I began life as a baby, before becoming a pharmacologist, completing a PhD studying cell signalling in platelets – the molecular mechanisms of blood clotting. I worked in academia, lecturing in clinical pharmacology before moved into industry, identifying and evaluating new clinical development opportunities for BOC/Linde Gas Therapeutics, the world’s largest medical gases company. Later, I joined the public research funding agency the Medical Research Council, where I oversaw various science areas (including inflammation, cardiovascular and respiratory research), leading the MRC-NIHR methodology research programme and MRC’s strategy and investments in experimental medicine.
"Prior to joining Team Kidney, I was head of prevention and early detection research at Cancer Research UK, the world’s second largest non-commercial funder of cancer research, leading the development of a new strategy and range of research investments. I also worked on secondment at the Office for Life Sciences, a UK government agency, helping to develop their cancer mission. I build my approach around an integrated multidisciplinary vision, driven by equitable improvements in health.
"When not working, I spend my time being harassed by my kids, Sammy and Rosemarie and puppy Zelda, and being supported by my wife Gemma. I love the world and would like to see as much of it as possible. I also love music, going to concerts, playing guitar and singing (badly) in a band, and recording songs (also badly)."
